The extreme right is the intellectual tour - Outpost Netherlands in construction

Havoc 3 april 1998

The Municipal elections are behind us and the extreme right has passed through the mincer. Only two seats were won there: One by the CD in Schiedam and one by Dutch Block in Utrecht. There are also some local political parties with right-wing sympathies, but for now the battle seems to be over and the anti-fascist movement seems to go hibernate.

Unfortunately this is not true. Not only anti-fascists, but also the extreme right itself the demise of their parties saw some time ago arrive. The smartest rats have end 1996 already left the sinking ship to turn their attention to a renewed fascist initiative: Outpost Netherlands. Outpost existed since the seventies in the Netherlands, but makes since 1996 an enormous development.

Establishment
Outpost was 1976 Founded in Flanders as a whole Dutch action group. She called for the lifting of Belgium, the merger of Flanders and the Netherlands, for example, turned against foreign influences on the 'Dutch’ cultuur. Statutory aims Outpost “the representation of the interests of all who may be considered to belong to the Dutch ethnic community”.

In 1978 Outpost is a Dutch department. Founders Frie Verbrugge, former SS Stan Beukelaar and former French NVU'er John Voermans. It is somewhat unclear what this department is doing the first years, but from the beginning of the eighties outpost in the Netherlands more and more to the streets. Moreover, it hereby always have to rely on a bus Flemings. Since the Dutch People's Union in that period the whole Dutch thought also cares dives often a Voorpost delegation in NCE activities. In 1982 trying Voorpost make themselves heard regularly. In many places posters are pasted and trying to get a number of times delights in markets. This is usually prohibited or prevented by anti-fascist actions. For Post conflict also seeks to increase by unpopular actions against squatters, against anti-militarism and the South African Apartheid regime. The years after the outpost succeed more often to hire a stand on various markets. Good luck, however, this has not. Dutch do not seem interested and actions must continue to rely on Flemish activists. In de periode 1986-1990 Outpost in the Netherlands is as good as dead. The handful of members holds some living-room meetings and visits Voorpost action in Flanders, but comes in Netherlands street not.

Nineties
In the early nineties blows Frisian Nazi Douwe van der Bos Voorpost new life. He will be given mainly support CP'86 framework as Marcel Rüter, Tim Mudde en Wim Beaux. Van der Bos does a lot of recruiting and trying to use the Frisian National Warns commemoration for Voorpost propaganda. From 1992 tot 1995 he organizes here far-right demonstrations. Furthermore, Van der Bos used the Outpost Network for solidarity work with the fascist militia in the struggle for independence from Croatia. Outpost also comes from 1994 organize contact days for its members. However, not to get off the sidelines of the Forest knows Outpost. It is no more than a CP'86-club in which members of their love for Flemish nationalism and the Great Dutch thought indulge. The membership remains small and contact days, an average of about thirty people. Again one chooses to take part but then in Flanders organized activities. However, in the Netherlands supports the actions of the CP'86, but that is not surprising since these organizations have many personnel overlaps. When Douwe van der Bos active politics around 1995/1996 slowly but surely leaving again, there remains not much of Outpost in Netherlands.

In the autumn of 1996 Presidency of Outpost is taken over by Marcel Rüter, which the organization will strike in a whole new way.

Marcel Rueter

Rüter's been years of contact for Post and is an avid supporter of the New Right ideology. This flow, mainly in France and Germany have much success, wants to create an extreme right intellectual climate in order to pave the way for far-right parties. For example, in France many years of propaganda of the New Right organization GRECE the way for the current success of the National Front. Rüters choice for Outpost is easy to understand from the New Right ideology: Before far-right parties could successfully have the ideology of the parties must be taken from the margin. In the Netherlands, is no question here of. The vast majority of Netherlands, let alone the Dutch intelligentsia, will not be associated with fascist, racist or narrowly nationalistic ideology.

Before it makes sense to stabbing energy in founding parties and participate in elections should the extreme right ideology first by a substantial group within society are negotiable. Furthermore, it lacks in the far-right parties themselves to ideology, intellect en kadervorming. These two cases Rüter wants to work on. Ruter: “The need for organizational outside party politics to work forming one hand for a legal framework, secondly, to influence thinking- and behavior in society should be clear with this.”

How happy this choice appears two months later when the CP'86 folded apart due to internal conflicts and further marginalizes ever. After the schism holds some smart’ CP'86 members party politics as seen and is active for Outpost.

New Right in practice
Outpost will currently go play a leading role. It argues emphatically above the existing parties (CD, CP'86 en VNN) and welcomes every nationalist as member. Furthermore, she wants no involvement with the party politics. Tim Mudde: “Outpost celebrates its party independent position more than ever. Outpost will still support all efforts to bundles of forces, but outpost will probably be a spectator to these developments!”

To edit such intellectual climate that can be talked about fascist and racist ideologies she walks three roads.

First one will through the organization “Study, Opbouw en Strijd” (SOS) to publish, discuss and teach. This will result currently especially the supporters, but eventually one will surely way attempt to engage in intellectual debate in Netherlands.

Second, interest groups will be established for specific target groups. Here is the Dutch Student (NLSV) an example of. The NLSV wants to organize nationalist students and thus cultivate an extreme right-wing intellectual framework.

Thirdly, on the street Outpost with all propaganda campaigns. One should think of leaflet actions or actions against "foreign’ influences. This will not necessarily racist actions. Tim Mudde, action leader of Outpost, in the vicinity of his residence Sassenheim and in The Hague (where he drives a taxi) already busy to besmirch English billboards with the text “Dutch!”.

Ruter: “By using meta-political actions to harass the society is slowly but surely a change in mind, attitude and vision. (…) Since virtually all politicians boast of popular support (…) the agitation by the above strategy will bear fruit fairly quickly and are supported or recognized by politicians. It appears that the meta political action is far superior to the party political action.”

Current city business
How Voorpost framework will look like in the near future is unclear. Especially Marcel Rüter and Tim Mudde will play a central role in. In addition, Michael Bos from Arnhem also become active. Continue to veterans like Ton Steemers and Bèr Willems of the party. Steemers since 1993 contact and Willems since 1994. Douwe van der Bos in an interview, upon his retirement from the Dutch party politics, said he remains active for Outpost.

If you put these names in a row outpost seems to at least one condition for its efforts to have met: Some smarter former CP'86-ers have accumulated here.

The rest of the bidders for Outpost comes mainly from the People's Nationalists Netherlands (VNN). Only Michael Forest is an exception to this rule. He is both the VNN as involved in the ANS and continued in municipal his signature to the list of NVU leader Joop Glimmerveen in Arnhem. Bos at this time is one of the most important anti-antifa activists in Netherlands.

For a Post-activist should not be forgotten finally Robin Versteeg from Haarlem. He is an English bard and played in recent years in many Voorpost meetings in the Netherlands and Belgium. In juli 1997 he would perform at a festival in Haarlem. However, when an article was published about his extreme right-wing background, the festival decided to cancel his performance.

The past years have seen a number of actions of Outpost. In april 1997 For the annual Post-Pentecostal camp in Limburg Evers Oord was held. There were several dozen right-wing extremists from Netherlands, Belgium and Germany present. During the summit were stuck Voorpost posters in ten cities against European unification.

Op 12 July wanted Outpost hold a commemoration of William of Orange in Delft. Fearing unrest she waives the commemoration. The VNN and the CD youngsters put the memorial by, but are removed by police from the church. In September Outpost organizes a beach and barbecue. The proceeds of this day will go to the Dutch Students. Furthermore, organized under various days.

Outpost seems provisionally only in their own circles to achieve some success, but will certainly try to convey her ideas further. Rüter and his associates in the near future will be able to count on our warm interest.
