Turn right Nijmegen: Protest, confrontation and intimidation

Turn right Nijmegen is an action group with a small trailer. However, they do know to cause much commotion. They are characterized by small media-pickets and trying strategically to influence local politics in Nijmegen. What is striking here is that both the media and local politics are often not aware of the extreme right-wing character of the action group that does not shun intimidation of politicians.

Nijmegen Turn right stems from AZC-Alert, an organization that gained notoriety by organizing protests at consultation evenings and council meetings around asylum centers. Turn right Nijmegen seen in public opinion as a right of friends, as a group of concerned citizens. The extreme right-wing character of the group, however, is insufficiently addressed. The dynamics between Nijmegen Turn right and local politics in the run up to the municipal elections in March 2018 become increasingly grim.

Michael Jansen

Key Figure in Nijmegen Turn right Michael Jansen (1985), in the media better known under his pseudonym Michel van den Berg. Michael Jansen shows up since 2014 within the extreme right political landscape. He maintains that year a one-man protest at a police station in Nijmegen while hundreds are doing Nijmegen declaration against "fewer Moroccans’ Wilders pronunciation.

Jansen was later involved in include the NCE and Pegida. In september 2016 he takes a NCE delegation participated in a demonstration of Outpost in Ghent. Involvement with Pegida is especially evident in frequent visits to Pegida demonstrations and participating in a flyer action Pegida in Nijmegen. With Identitair Does he occupied a mosque under construction in Venlo, an Islamic school in Amsterdam and a house next by refugees squatted houses in Amsterdam. In this latter action was Michael Jansen press spokesman and worked with Paul Peters (earlier in his activist career vandalized a Jewish cemetery) and leaders from the Dutch neo-Nazi movement as Willem van Dijk and Tom van den Hoek. Jansen has made many friends in a short time in the extreme right.

Other pacemakers in Nijmegen Turn right are Adé Jansen (1957) and Frieda Jansen-Bastiaans (1963). This couple is active in Nijmegen Turn right and involved in local politics in Nijmegen, by attending debates and lectures. Adé Jansen organized within a long history (extreme)rechts. In 2002 He is regional coordinator for the LPF in Nijmegen and MP candidate for this party. Two years later, he is on the list for the European elections, the far-right splinter New Right. In 2016 He is an important player in the militant Municipalities Against Protesters. (defunct because some members serving many years in prison for throwing a fire bomb at a mosque in Enschede) In the same year we see Adé and Frieda Jansen different Pegida demonstrations and are active in the Nazi NVU. Tot slot can Erna Bons (1955) to be mentioned, because of her parliamentary ambitions. In the past Bons attended actions Pegida. Turn right at Nijmegen she participated twice in attempts to disrupt debate evening about Zwarte Piet. But vouchers will also be a member of parliament. As a candidate number two OPA Nijmegen she participates in the municipal elections 2018. OPA, self-proclaimed “PVV-light”, the former PVV'er Tineke Poortinga as party leader. Bons came ahead of elections discredited because of its internet activities. The party leader she served her extreme right expressions and verbal abuse by celebrities and politicians clearing.

Protest, confrontation, intimidation

Vigilante patrols in Nijmegen ATMs” headlines local newspaper De Gelderlander in February 2018. The artikel describes how Nijmegen turn right places that keeps watch are classified as unsafe at ATMs. With a small number of activists Nijmegen Turn right in the center of the city present “to do what the government should do. "If they witness a robbery than “We do a citizen's arrest and deliver the offender to the police” said spokesman Michael Jansen. Such action is characteristic of Nijmegen Turn right. It is a small, easy to implement action and has a relatively high media impact. During this action spread Nijmegen Turn right flyers with a voting advice for OPA. Handing out flyers and making calls does Nijmegen Turn right “to gain trust from the community” Jansen said in the newspaper.

With these actions Nijmegen Turn right foot trying to gain ground in local politics. The unqualified reaction of Mayor Bruls, which the action of these rightwing extremist group simply as “a form of civil” considers shows that the group here partially succeeds in. Supporting Erna Bons in its campaign for OPA is another way Nijmegen is trying to gain political influence Turn right. in vain, the party has to 886 votes short of a seat and will not go to the entry for Nijmegen council should turn right. As the action group which will have to find yourself, as early March 2018 tried to send a letter to all parties in the city council. Herein called Nijmegen Turn right to block the construction of a new mosque, which followed a call by the VVD and GroenLinks.

Nijmegen Turn right however does not end with frivolous actions referred, neat letters and calls. In maart 2018, The municipal elections are coming, Prime Minister Rutte comes to the Waalstad to support the VVD campaign. Nijmegen Turn right holds along with a Identitair Resistance “Oprutte!!” banner action on this campaign visit. Shortly before this action takes one or two kilometers further, however, a much grimmer place action. A group of people enters the campaign office of D66. There is only one employee at the time present. The intruders stick inside the campaign office under with Identitair Resistance stickers. "We come back later!"Let the activists on departure imminent know, after which they leave the building at the Augustijnenstraat.

This was not the first time that Identitair Resistance sought confrontation with political opponents. In november 2017 Pegida demonstrates in Nijmegen. Activists Identitair Resistance Turn right and Nijmegen are also provided. Remarkably, if Pegida protesters. "We kept near the procession eye" writes Identitair Does this joint acttie. "Pushy extreme left gear we loved by probing conversations about freedom of demonstration remotely" they continue in their report. The action groups are this day in the crowd along the route of the demonstration. Their goal is to seek a confrontation with leftist protesters who oppose Pegida. The actions against the already mentioned in this article discussion evenings about Zwarte Piet also fit within this pattern: Looking street confrontations with political opponents.

Turn right NijmegenA low regard such activities Nijmegen Turn right, the intimidation of GroenLinks council member candidate. This candidate was present at a discussion evening about Zwarte Piet, end 2017. Michael Jansen protested Nijmegen Turn right at this meeting, after which there occurred irregularities. Jones claims to have suffered a concussion here. In maart 2018 Jansen find this candidate Councilor again during an election debate in the hall. The end of the evening is Zwarte Piet Jansen apparently still high. He visits her and scolds her a liar. If GroenLinks candidate wants to end the conversation he threatened to throw hot coffee over her. Upon leaving the meeting begins Jansen street still shouting at her.

In addition to local activities Nijmegen Turn right is also active nationwide. Along with Identitair Resistance members of Nijmegen Turn right national and international presence in actions of the latter organization. Turn right Nijmegen is hovering with their image. On the one hand, the action group takes publicly distance of NCE as local media appoint the bond between these two organizations, because that party would be too extreme. On the other hand they stand side by side with the NCE at demonstration and there is a bond between Nijmegen Turn right activists and simply NCE. Michael Weinstein demonstrated the NCE and Adé and Frieda Jansen there are to this day active. In februari 2018 NCE claims Nijmegen Turn right regrets the distancing and the NCE just as “another right-wing group” regards.

What we see is an organization that presents itself on the one hand as neat interlocutor of communal politics. On the other hand Nijmegen Turn right turns his hand to intimidation and provocation and makes the group in the field of active members and cooperation with other organizations are part of the 'family’ extreme right-wing organizations in Netherlands. If you turn right Nijmegen sees as a legitimate interlocutor threaten their extreme right-wing ideas and network to get a foot in the door. Nijmegen Turn right can be regarded as the Nijmegen branch of Identitair Resistance, performs radical actions and houses activists NCE. It is therefore far from decent citizens club.
